Nolvadex is a brand name for Tamoxifen Citrate – non-steroid substance with anti-estrogenic properties. This agent is able to “compete” with estrogen in various tissues (such as breast tissue for example). In medicine, Tamoxifen is very useful in the treatment of patients with tumors caused by the action of estrogen (such as breast cancer). Normally, it is used in the treatment of certain forms of breast cancer in women. The drug stops the growth of malignant tumors and prevents the formation of new ones.
Effects of Tamoxifen
Bodybuilders find this drug very effective in combating the effects of steroid aromatization and increasing estrogen levels in the body (such as gynecomastia and fat deposition in the body). As an anti-estrogen, Nolvadex works by blocking the estrogen receptors. This drug is very good during the diet: it supports fat burning process. Due to its anti-estrogenic effects, the drug helps maintain low body fat (as low as possible).
Nolvadex can be taken together with strong androgenic steroids – Dianabol, Anadrol or Testosterone. Athletes prone to accumulation of water in the body and those who have problems with breast should use Nolvadex as a preventive measure.
Nolvadex works very well in most cases. It is not surprising that some athletes mix it with Anadrol and Dianabol, as well as with diuretics. Some of them take this drug at the end of a steroid cycle in order to increase testosterone production and prevent side effects caused by high estrogen.
- The drug blocks female hormones;
- Rapid absorption, anti-catabolic activity;
- This drug can be taken during the cycles and PCT;
- Tamoxifen improves lipid profile (good and bad cholesterol);
- It improves the effectiveness of many cycles (especially based on Testosterone).
Some Tamoxifen drawbacks: the drug is quite toxic (sometimes it causes loss of appetite and nausea, increased risk of thrombosis). Tamoxifen increases the amount of progesterone receptors, so it should not be used if the cycle is based on progestin drugs (Deca, Trenbolone or Oxymetholone). In this case, one should better use Clomiphene.
Tamoxifen (as well as Clomid) should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It should be avoided in case of hypersensitivity to the drug, fever, bleeding, itching, hair loss, decreased appetite, constipation.
If you suffer from depression or dizziness, you should stop taking Nolvadex and consult a specialist. During the first week the drug can cause headache, drowsiness and dizziness. In fact, this is a normal effect of antiestrogens such as Clomid (Clomiphene) and Tamoxifen.
How to take Nolvadex: instruction and dose
Almost any post cycle therapy includes Nolvadex. Moderate doses of Tamoxifen will help you avoid dangerous effects. But this method requires some experience. At the same time, note that you should not take high doses of the drug throughout the cycle, as moderate amounts of estrogens help boost performance.
The usual daily dose for athletes is 10-30 mg per day. It will be enough to take only 10 mg per day for the prevention of side effects caused by high estrogen. As a preventive measure, it is sufficient to begin using Nolvadex 3-4 weeks after starting steroids. Those who are prone to gynecomastia, water retention and weight gain (when taking Dianabol, Testosterone, Anadrol, Deca and other steroids) usually take 20 – 30 mg per day. Combined therapy including 20-30 mg of Nolvadex and 25-50 mg of Proviron per day provides exceptionally good results. The same applies to athletes during the competitive phase (as well as to women). Anyway, women should avoid using Nolvadex or reduce the dose to 25 mg per day.
The tablets are taken 1-2 times a day with meals.
Nolvadex during the PCT
Tamoxifen plays a special role in the post cycle therapy. In this situation, this is a number one drug. Your testosterone and dihydrotestosterone levels will dramatically fall down after you finish taking steroids. So, what should you do? That’s right, take Tamoxifen.
The drug temporarily blocks estrogens and helps fully restore your body’s systems. In addition, high levels of female hormones contribute to the loss of muscle mass. Thus, one can say that Tamoxifen plays a key role in the PCT. There will be no chance for you to maintain muscle mass without anti-estrogens such as Nolvadex or Clomid. If you are aimed at serious results, this is the drug you cannot do without.
Side Effects of Nolvadex
As for Tamoxifen in bodybuilding, the drug is used only in conjunction with anabolic drugs. Most of steroid medications contain a large number of components with a strong aromatizing nature. These components tend to provoke an increase in the total number of estrogen in the blood. As a result, due to the accumulation of estrogens, athletes may suffer from feminization symptoms:
- Gynecomastia (swelling of the breast tissue in men, unilateral or bilateral enlargement);
- Accumulation of fluid in the body;
- Fat accumulation in the subcutaneous tissue.
In turn, Tamoxifen is the drug that is able to prevent all these unpleasant symptoms. This effect is achieved due to blocking estrogen receptors.
However, the drug may reduce the anabolic effect of some steroids. Nolvadex is known to lower estrogen levels. Yet some steroids (various forms of Testosterone first of all) can work only at sufficiently high levels of estrogen. Those who prefer mainly mild steroids (Primobolan, Winstrol, Oxandrolone, Deca Durabolin) must weigh all the pros and cons (whether to take Nolvadex or not, as it can reduce the mild effect of these drugs).
Side effects at doses up to 30 mg per day are rare. In rare cases, these include nausea, vomiting, fever, dizziness, disturbances of visual function, absence of menstrual periods in women. Female athletes should also pay attention to the fact that they should not mix Nolvadex with birth control pills.
Unlike Clomid, Tamoxifen is a little bit more potent. That is why you need to be careful. Higher doses (100 mg) can cause loss of appetite, excessive estrogen blockade and libido problems. Typically, athletes feel the pain in the nipples and begin to take high amounts of Tamoxifen. Long-term use leads to vision problems, poor blood circulation and other possible medical problems. That is why it is not recommended to use this product for a long time.
Tamoxifen is popular both in bodybuilding and general medicine. This drug is a great example of an antiestrogen agent available at an affordable price. It is often used instead of Clomid. Note that the only serious drawback of the drug is the inability to use it with steroids with progestagenic activity.
As for the rest, the reviews are extremely positive. It blocks female hormones and helps athletes lose weight and maintain muscle stiffness. At the same time, Tamoxifen can increase the amount of free testosterone. However, even if you do not intend to actively use Tamoxifen during the cycle, you will still need it during the PCT. In general, this is the most important drug in the arsenal of any athlete.
